A few months ago, Morrowind celebrated turning 20 years old, and while it’s still beloved among many fans of the Elder Scrolls series or western RPGs in general, there’s no denying that it has aged over the past two decades. Given this, it’s understandable that many seek out ways to give the classic game a more modern face lift, such as through the Morrowind Rebirth mod. And while graphics aren’t everything when it comes to gaming, there’s no harm in bringing a retro title into the current generation.

A number of images uploaded to Twitter by user Nibel show that Morrowind can indeed look a little more up-to-date thanks to the upcoming RTX Remix mod tool. The screenshots from the game show side-by-side comparisons, demonstrating how things look now and how they will look with ray tracing and texture upscaling. The difference is quite significant, with the updated version looking a lot more detailed with pretty fantastic visuals and major improvements to the lighting. Nvidia says the Remix tool will be coming out shortly, but there’s no finalized release date for it at the time of writing.

Ray tracing capabilities and other AI-powered visual improvements are pretty much industry standard these days. Many expect modern releases to utilize it, but older games or ones that don’t put emphasis on graphics are also making use of it. Even Minecraft supports Nvidia’s RTX algorithm, and while the 2011 game could be classed as fairly old these days, it’s a much newer release than the likes of Morrowind.

It may not be the largest game in the entire Elder Scrolls series — that title undoubtedly goes to Daggerfall — but Morrowind is an absolute classic installment in Bethesda’s long-running epic franchise. Some who have never experienced it may well be put off by the dated graphics, even with some mods installed, but the opportunity to play an enhanced version of it means that some may be intrigued to experience this classic TES game for the first time.

Morrowind is available for PC and the original Xbox.
