Gad’s casting was announced by The Hollywood Reporter Tuesday, which describes Emmerich’s film with Lionsgate as the story of a “ragtag team” sent on an “impossible mission” to save humanity as the moon falls out of orbit. It sounds similar to movies like Jerry Bruckheimer’s Armageddon, but with Emmerich at the helm there’s the potential for some fun action schlock.

The Director is responsible for films such as Independence Day, which received a sequel in 2016. While Gad’s history as an actor does not necessarily lend itself to the idea of being an action hero in the same vein as Bruce Willis or Will Smith, he was recently in space as Herman Judd in the HBO dark comedy series Avenue 5.

No release date for Moonfall was listed, and Emmerich’s Internet Movie Database (IMDb) page lists the film as currently being in pre-production. Other films like The Matrix 4 have been halted due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Moonfall is currently in pre-production for Lionsgate.
