Moon Knight follows Oscar Isaac as Marc Spector, a Jewish-American mercenary with dissociative identity disorder (DID). His character eventually becomes a conduit for the Egyptian moon god, Khonshu. Unlike other MCU series that have come before, Moon Knight serves more as a standalone story with little reference to other characters or storylines.

If fans were confused as to when Moon Knight is supposed to take place in the grand scheme of things, it appears Slater has no idea as well, as he took to Twitter to respond to a confused fan asking about the show’s chronological placement. “A lot of people have asked this, but I have no idea, sorry. We didn’t know when our show would debut in relation to their other shows and films, so the timeline was intentionally left vague,” Slater tweeted. According to The Direct, Moon Knight was announced back in 2019 but did not begin filming until 2021 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, and while the series was always set up to tell a standalone story, perhaps the reason why the timeline was left vague is due to the uncertainty of the pandemic and the way it has affected phase four (as numerous projects have seen their release dates shifted around).
As the series is now approaching its final episodes, with the possibility of a post-credits scene, fans may get to see a connection to another MCU story or character that will hopefully offer a bit of insight as to when Moon Knight takes place. But even if that is not the case, fans have still been presented with one unique and thrilling story that stands on its own and has set up a character who is here to stay in the MCU.
Moon Knight has received much praise for Isaac’s performance, the darker tone compared to other MCU series, and the standalone story. The series also stars Ethan Hawke as Arthur Harrow, the series’ main antagonist, Gaspard Ulliel as Anton Mogart/Midnight Man, May Calamawy as Layla El-Faouly, F. Murray Abraham as the voice of Khonshu, Khalid Abdalla as Selim, and Lucy Thackeray as Donna. Moon Knight will continue running until May 4th, with an episode premiering every Wednesday.
Moon Knight is now streaming on Disney Plus.
