Unlike Marvel Studios’ WandaVision, The Falcon and the Winter Soldier, Loki, and Hawkeye, Moon Knight introduced an entirely new cast. The series starred Oscar Isaac, May Calamawy, and Ethan Hawke. The six-episode series explored the intricate world of Marc Spector and Steven Grant (Isaac), who grapple with Dissociative Identity Disorder. Without any cameos, the series was able to remain contained within itself, and Diab preferred it that way.

In an interview with Variety, Diab covered many topics relating to Moon Knight, including surprises from the finale, Moon Knight’s connection to the rest of the MCU, and the significance of the series for Egyptians, including his family. When it came to relating Moon Knight to the rest of the MCU, Diab revealed that originally, there were cameos scheduled to air as part of the series. “I want to tell you the very first scene, there was a crossover, and the very end scene, there was a crossover,” Diab said. “But as the story developed we kept changing the scripts, we felt like, ‘We don’t need that.’”
Diab went on to admit that the more he mulled it over, he thought including a cameo from another Marvel character was necessary in order to connect Isaac’s character to the franchise. Ultimately, he found that by not including one, Moon Knight was equally unique. “The best compliment we get on the show is when people tell us, ‘This doesn’t feel like a Marvel show,” Diab said. “It feels like a standalone show that feels more dramatic, more dark, grounded.” Diab even recalls joking with Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige about the discovery that the entire MCU is occurring in Steven’s head.
When Diab was asked about Moon Knight’s future, he wasn’t afraid to admit that he is awaiting the same news as everyone else. However, Diab’s lack of definitive answers didn’t stop him from hypothesizing about the series’ future. “I think they’re going to stay,” Diab said. “Maybe it’s going to be a film. Maybe it’s going to be a journey like what happened with WandaVision.” Diab did make the request that should Moon Knight have any future productions, no matter the form, he wants in. “I wish one day, if there is an expansion, I would be a part of it,” Diab said. With an expansion, Diab hopes it will give a chance for these characters, including the new mid-credits character, to shine.
Even after directing four episodes of Moon Knight, Diab is just as in the dark as Marvel fans, but he remains optimistic about its future. Diab and the rest of the Moon Knight team have taken pride in knowing how well fans have responded to the series, even without the cameos. As for what the future may hold for Moon Knight, Diab said, “We ended it in a way that feels like a beginning.” Should the series get picked up for a second season or receive a film expansion, Diab will be happy to pick up where he left off.
Moon Knight is now streaming on Disney Plus.
