“Asylum,” the fifth episode of the Marvel Studios series, tracked Steven and Marc’s experiences in the afterlife as they were guided by Taweret, an Egyptian goddess. Their exploration spirals into their childhood memories, where it is learned that Marc created Steven to cope with the traumatic loss of his younger brother and physical attacks from his mother. This offered an explanation for the nature of their relationship and the Dissociative Identity Disorder that the two struggled to come to terms with in the series’ earlier episodes.

Over the course of the Marvel Studios series, Isaac has had the daunting task of portraying two polar opposite characters in Steven and Marc. “His performance is unbelievable,” Diab said to Entertainment Weekly. “The difference between Marc and Steven is so huge, yet they’re so similar. He did a fantastic job developing those characters, and when he inhabited the two, they’re completely different. He made them his own.” For Diab, “Asylum” is a notable Moon Knight episode not only for Isaac’s performance but for the insight it offers on DID. “Through episode 5, you understand that usually people who have DID are traumatized when they’re kids, and they create a character that can overcome their fear or shield themselves from their fear,” Diab said. “They create a character that didn’t go through that trauma. I love how that’s integrated into the story – it makes the whole show.”

On the topic of Moon Knight’s impending finale, Diab expressed his hopes for fans to feel satisfied and teased that a few surprises may await them. “I hope it’s a satisfying wrap-up to our story,” Diab said. “I feel it is. There are some surprises. I think the audience deserves a big action scenes, but it’s more than that. It has some twists and turns, and I really feel like it’s a satisfying ending to our journey.” Future plans for Moon Knight are unclear, though Loki was renewed for a second season. Moon Knight may follow in the series’ footsteps or receive its own film.

Moon Knight operates in a manner similar to WandaVision, where the initial environment is not only unfamiliar but full of questions that even the focal character cannot answer. For Wanda, it was the unintentional takeover of Westview and its citizens, and the creation of Vision, which was ultimately a result of her grief following Vision’s death. The nature of Steven and Marc’s relationship is quite similar and just as heartbreaking as it is surprising.

If there’s one thing that can be expected from the Moon Knight finale, it’s the unexpected. Each episode of Moon Knight has offered a new way for viewers to look at both Steven and Marc, and their relationship with one another. Even with the massive revelation that “Asylum” provided, Moon Knight still has loads of questions to answer and stories of others to account for. With Diab’s words and the nature of the series, the unpredictability of Moon Knight is far from over.

Moon Knight is now streaming on Disney Plus.
