How to Start the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne DLC
In order to start the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion, players must first meet two criteria:
They must have the Monster Hunter World: Iceborne expansion installed. They must be Hunter Rank 16 (HR 16). To reach HR 16, players must complete the main story of Monster Hunter World.
Once players have met both of these criteria, they will receive a Monster Hunter World: Iceborne tutorial that indicates that “a major new expedition is about to begin.” Players should then speak with the Feisty Fiver standing to the left of the quest board in the Astera hub to begin this expedition.
This quest will task players with following the Handler through the Ancient Forest, and after triggering a series of cutscenes, a player’s Hunter Rank cap is removed and Master Rank (MR) is unlocked.
After completing the quest in the Ancient Forest, players should return to Astera and speak with the Commander, who will send them to Monster Hunter World: Iceborne’s new area, Hoarfrost Reach. Here, players will defeat the monster Betodus, which will then give them access to the new MHW: Iceborne hub area, Selina. In Selina, players can gather quests, trade with merchants, and continue their journey through Monster Hunter World: Iceborne.

While those that played Monster Hunter World upon its release in 2018 should have little trouble in figuring out how to start the MHW: Iceborne DLC, those that are jumping in for the very first time may not be aware that they need to fully complete the base game before they can advance to the expansion. Fortunately, the newly released Monster Hunter World Guardian Armor set will give these new players a leg up on getting to Iceborne content without much issue.
Monster Hunter World: Iceborne releases on September 6 for PS4 and Xbox One.
