There are three main additions/changes listed that have been implemented with this update. New event quests will be available every week and new DLC can now be purchased from the Nintendo eShop. Finally, a new Gyro Correction function has been added to the Gyroscope options that allows players to adjust how frequently the position of the gyroscope is recalibrated. But perhaps the most recognizable addition is the addition of Sonic the Hedgehog content.

The update will be installed automatically in most cases. But, to double-check, players can go into the System Settings on their Switch, select Data Management, then Manage Software, and finally select Monster Hunter Rise to see the version listed. This patch is version 3.6.1.

The Sonic the Hedgehog collaboration adds a Sonic costume for the Palico, a Tails costume for the Palamute, and Sonic-inspired clothing for the player character. The player character Sonic set is a layered armor that is available to all players through two special event quests. The Palico and Palamute costumes are also available through these quests. As an added bonus, the Palico costume has some special effects like the spin dash and Super Sonic.

While it might seem like an odd collaboration, it’s not all that unusual for Capcom to reach out for unlikely crossover events with other gaming properties. Earlier this year saw a Ghosts ‘N Goblins collaboration for Halloween. Monster Hunter World saw multiple crossovers. They included Capcom’s own Resident Evil 2, Street Fighter 5, and Devil May Cry in addition to CD Projekt Red’s Witcher, Guerrilla Games’ Horizon Zero Dawn, Square Enix’s Final Fantasy 14, Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed, and more. Taking things a step further brought in the inclusion of the Monster Hunter film with two special quests. All of this is in addition to wacky collaborations with bands and fast food chains in other entries in the series.

Monster Fixes

Resolved an issue preventing monsters from retreating if the player joined a Rampage Quest with specific timing, resulting in the quest being unable to complete.

Player Fixes

Fixed a bug causing display issues for the Bishaten armor series when equipped on Body Type 01. Fixed a bug preventing the target camera reticle from changing when a monster changes its posture due to a special status. Fixed a bug that makes it look as if Great Wirebugs are not moving if you use one while gathering an item right after sliding. Fixed a bug preventing some saved colors from being properly reflected in the preview when using the character creator. Fixed a bug causing the forelock of the Izuchi Tail hairstyle to clip through the Kulu-Ya-Ku Helm. Fixed a bug preventing the effects of Critical Draw/Punishing Draw from being activated during specific moves with certain melee weapons. Fixed a bug in the reset timing for the great sword’s Rage Slash that was introduced after a bug fix in Ver. 3. 4. 1. Fixed the controls explanation for the hammer’s Dash Breaker, because it was the same as the one for the Silkbind Spinning Bludgeon. Fixed a bug occasionally causing the game to freeze if the bowgun’s Sticky Ammo explodes right when the screen changes, such as during the quest results.

Miscellaneous Fixes

Fixed a bug occasionally preventing the photosensitivity warning from being displayed in the selected language. Fixed a bug causing the options to be reset to default if you cancel after performing specific actions on the Options screen. Fixed a bug preventing the “!” icon from disappearing for the message at the very bottom of the chat window, if you look at the log while you have an unread chat message. Fixed a bug preventing the “!” icon from disappearing even if you accept all Guild Cards after performing a specific set of actions. Fixed a bug causing the pressing of directional buttons being registered twice if they are pressed once at the exact moment when the Quest Select screen is displayed. Fixed various text bugs. Other miscellaneous bug fixes have been made.

Some may consider these events and collaborations silly, and in instances like the Mega Man armor in Monster Hunter World, they wouldn’t be wrong. But, above all else, they strive to be fun and are an excuse for additional content to make its way into a franchise beloved by many. While they can’t all be hits, at least it shows Capcom is willing to try new things and is fond of updating Monster Hunter.

Monster Hunter Rise is available now for Nintendo Switch, with a PC release coming January 12, 2022.
