While there is still much that fans are waiting to learn about Sunbreak, the DLC will expand on the game’s weapons, introduce more areas for hunters to hunt in, and will also add plenty of new monsters for players to track down and eventually make weapons and armor out of. There are numerous classic monsters that players hope to return in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak, the developers have also started giving some information on the entirely new monster Malzeno.

Malzeno the Elder Dragon

Malzeno is an entirely new elder dragon being introduced in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak. Malzeno has a body similar to what many expect from a European dragon and has already gotten some comparisons to Velkhana, an elder dragon introduced in Monster Hunter World: Iceborne. With a Large size, Malzeno has a very imposing appearance with a shimmering coat of black scales accompanied by tufts of red feathers that accent its wings, chest, and front legs. The monster was shown off in Sunbreak’s reveal trailer and looked very impressive with the contrast of its colors as well as the red underside of its wings.

As for Malzeno’s offensive appendages, it sports a massive claw on the end of each of its wings as well as a having a few spikes on the end of its tail. These are accompanied by large golden horns and large claws on each of its feet. It also appears to have large frills on either side of its neck and the ability to cover itself with its wings in a fashion similar to a cape. With all of these different ways to attack the player, Malzeno seems very likely to be a challenging elder dragon fight that players likely won’t reach until the expansion’s endgame. However, once players do come across the dragon it seems as though it will be beautiful, especially as Monster Hunter Rise is finally coming to PC.

As for what unique abilities or characteristics players should expect from Malzeno, there have been few details released. However, it has been shown to be capable of taking down a Rathalos so players know that it is definitely capable. The elder dragon’s design also seems to be highly reminiscent of classical gothic vampires both in its visual design as well as the sound of drinking, which seems to imply it drinks the blood of other monsters in the Sunbreak trailer.

These elements could point towards how the Malzeno will act, which could include some interesting new mechanics like it healing by killing other monsters after fleeing the hunters or even having attacks that leech health from hunters during the fight. It also could lead to the Malzeno having certain weaknesses to sunlight or certain recipes, which could also add an interesting element to the expansion. Hopefully, players will get more news on Malzeno and what other monsters will come in Monster Hunter Rise: Sunbreak sometime soon.

Monster Hunter Rise is available now on Switch with a PC release planned for January 12, 2022. The Sunbreak expansion is planned to release in 2022.
